Raising Kids Who Clean + Win a House Cleaner for a Day!

Growing up, my mom always said that if it takes you more than 10 minutes to clean up any one room, then it is too messy. It is a standard that I try to live by even today - except for those quarterly deep-cleaning sessions! I hardly have a passion for cleaning, but I do think that the state of your house (or room) reflects the state of your psychological and emotional well-being. The more cluttered your inner-life, the more cluttered your surroundings will be, and visa versa. For this reason, I want to instill in my kids a responsibility for maintaining a clean existence, inside & out.

Since my girls are young, this is easier than you might expect! They love to help out - with everything!! From dusting to vacuuming, doing the dishes or laundry, and even scrubbing the bath tub! If I'm doing it, then they want to do it. We have "rags" & "cleaning solutions" so they're safe when helping, and plenty of pretend attachments for the vacuum & child-sized brooms, etc.

The hard part is not cleaning, but de-cluttering! For this, we bought some kids toy organization & storage bins so the girls can take out one bin to play with at a time, then return it when they are done. It works great, with few reminders, and helps us maintain a de-cluttered existence (for the most part) and always makes the cleaning part so much easier!

All in all, the largest challenge when encouraging the girls to help clean, is my own patience ... because it generally takes a bit longer when they're "helping" than when I'm doing it on my own. This is a small price, worth paying, to have them understand the importance of doing their part to maintain a clean house!
