Now that the kids are back in school and cooler weather in on the horizon, I thought I’d share a really easy and delicious recipe for Homemade Sloppy Joes! We first started making this recipe a few years ago when some good friends shared their recipe with us! Over the years, it has become a go-to recipe for busy nights and is always a family favorite! My girls actually like to eat the mix without the bun, which is okay with me!
- 1lb lean Ground Beef (or ground Turkey or Chicken)
- 2 tbsp Red Onion, chopped
- 1 clove Garlic, minced
- 1 can (14.5oz) Diced Tomatoes (can also use fresh tomatoes, chopped)
- 1 c. fresh Mushrooms, chopped (see how to clean a mushroom)
- 1/2 c. Ketchup
- 2 tbsp Dijon Mustard
- 1 tsp dried Oregano
- 1/2 tsp Salt
- 1/4 tsp Black Pepper
In a large skillet, brown ground meat and drain off any fat or water that remains in the pan. Add onion, garlic, tomatoes, and mushrooms to the meat and saute over medium heat for 2 minutes.
Add the remaining ingredients to the pan and simmer, uncovered, for 10 minutes or until thick and creamy. Cool for a few minutes before serving on buns or bread. To keep our buns from getting soggy, we toast them first.
This dish also makes great leftovers! Just store them in the fridge and heat them in the microwave for a delicious meal the next day!
